One year and nine months later after that first online meeting, their wedding day came. And it was one big party!

Here’s a letter I got from her last month. Mishu you, too, Alleth! Thank you so much for being level-headed and not panicky! Sana lahat ng brides like you. LOL!

Thank you for standing up for me with all the Emcee incident. I will remember our meetings at Coffee Bean. I apologize if I gave you a hard time on Escort cards. And good call on the tents!

Ill let you know when we are in town, we love to take you out for dinner or something kasi when we go on meetings, you dont like to eat.

My only regret is I dont think I have a picture with you.

I have been super blessed with my clients and I am always humbled by the trust they give me. I think it’s only right that I pay it forward. I don’t think I am unfair to my clients naman kasi pag sa kanila, ako mismo yung gumagawa and they don’t have to do research anymore.

Isa pa, with all the wedding planning seminars out there, anyone can be a coordinator. Even a bride can just take a course. But then again, on the day of the wedding, what counts most is the experience, efficiency, reliability, sincerity to help, street-smartness, and the ability to think and to troubleshoot quickly, of the team. And those traits, I am sure, my team has.

When brides ask me for referrals to designers, I always tell them outright that having a perfect fit is my number one priority. I’ve had a bride who had a gown worth almost half a million. I was so excited! Come wedding day, the fit in the bodice area was very unsatisfactory; if you were talking to the bride, you could see into her bosom.

Recent events, however, have made me realize that aside from the fit, the attitude and the efficiency of service of the designer matter a great deal, too. Oo naman, alam ko naman yun dati but normally kasi I wouldn’t really care. Deadma kung feeling diva the designer and as long as s/he does her work, kaya ko siyang deadmahin. But as I said, recent events have convinced me that a designer’s work is not just about delivering a great gown.

If you visit my personal blog, you’d know that I would be taking a hiatus from coordination next year. Since I only have a handful of brides left and all their designers, I think, are okay naman, this is not even for my brides but for other brides who are still looking for THE perfect gown maker.

Here are a few things which I think a bride must bear in mind when she’s looking for a gown maker:

(Disclaimer: I am not a gown designer. Hell, I am not even into fashion. LOL! But I am a wedding planner, and I think, a good one at that. I am not claiming to be a fashion expert nor an expert’s apprentice. These are merely based on my years in the industry and on my observations on what works and what does not.)

1. Design. I know most designers design based on the bride’s personality and what the bride wants. That’s super okay. Sometimes though, hindi bagay sa bride what she wants. Plus I think most underestimate the technical aspects of the design. Since not all women have the perfect modelesque curvy body (kung oo lang, eh di ang saya ko na! hahaha!), it’s a designer’s job to make sure that the cut of the gown fits her… really fits her. And it’s not just about the body, pati leeg, hugis ng mukha, layo ng mukha sa katawan… lahat yan tinitignan. A very good friend and my favorite designer once told my bride super matter of factly “You have a very pretty face but your head is not proportional to your body because you’re so slim so we must do something about that.” My bride was so not offended and readily delved into finding the perfect cut for her.

Btw, the most common mistake I see is assuming that having an off-shoulder gown would benefit a plus-size body. I am sorry to say that it does not. Hindi po nakakatago ng malaking braso ang off-shoulder neckline. I have browsed through David’s Bridal’s selection for the plus-size bride. Umabot na ako sa kalahati ng 126 gown designs and I had yet to see an off-the-shoulder gown. If you must have sleeves, then have cap sleeves or sheer long sleeves (dapat ata sheer para hindi mabigat tignan).

2. Fit and Length. Fit is mejo common sense: walang kulubot sa bodice, nakalapat yung neckline sa katawan, hindi naka-usbong ang puson, etc. And normally, I think, designers do try to create that perfect fit. But of course, one cannot be complacent. Look at the pictures of that designer’s previous brides and really study how his gowns fit real life brides.

Length is more often that not, overlooked. Make sure to fit the gown in the shoes that you’re going to wear with your petticoat and sash on (if applicable). With the gown (and sash and petticoat) and shoes on, make sure the hem of the gown is one inch from the floor. Ekaskto na yan paglakad ng carpet.

3. Attitude. If a designer asks you to starve yourself to be able to fit into his/her gown, please get someone else (unless you’re a fashion model by profession and it’s your job to fit into his gown). And, remember, you’re the client and while you should not abuse this position, you’re still the client. (Please do not abuse this position. )

4. Taste. Enough said.

5. Budget. I had a bride who got an astronomical quote from a designer. She asked if pwede pa babaan. Hindi na daw kasi yun na yung quote. She asked if she can do anything (like change the design or whatever), hindi na daw kasi yun na yung design. And I’m telling you, her original budget was not low.

6. Service. This is the reason I am writing this whole post, to make sure that no bride is shortchanged when it comes to service.

Before signing a contract and paying a downpayment, you might consider asking/discussing the following questions/points:

a. Appointments. Will I get a schedule of the fittings beforehand or will you just inform me a week before each fitting appointment? Do you fit during weekends (when most brides are available) or do we have to fit during weekdays? Oh yeah, can I actually fit the gown or do you subscribe to the notion that brides can’t fit their gowns?

b. Delivery. Will you be delivering the gown or do I pick it up? If I pick it up, when will it be ready? A week before, a few days before, the day before? Upon delivery, is it ready to be worn or do I have to have it cleaned first? If so, how do you suggest I clean it?

c. If I pick it up, chances are it will be in a box. Should I just leave it in the box or should I take it out? Do I need to have it ironed/ steamed ironed?

d. Will you lend me a dress form? If you’ll be delivering the gown (to the preps venue normally), I assume that the dress form will be with it. If not, when will the dress form be available for my use? If it will be delivered on the day, I would need it at least five hours before the wedding ceremony. Please make sure it is there otherwise the photographers will not be able to take pictures of my gown when they arrive. Also, please lend me a dress form approximate my size (S, M, L). Sana rin black and hindi shiny gold. [LOL! This actually happened to us and we had to look for another dress form.]

e. Will you be sending someone to dress me up? If so, will they have emergency kits (sewing kit, scissors, etc.) or do I have to provide that? Will your staff bring an iron/steam iron to iron out creases?

f. Willl you be sending someone to assist me in the church? How about in the reception?

g. If emergencies arise, for example, a gown accessory was forgotten in your shop or something, can I count on you and your staff to at least do your best to make sure the problem is addressed? [I don't think anyone would say NO to this but you have to ask this just so they know that you're counting on them.]

When you ask/discuss these questions/points, please be magalang and do it in a very polite manner. The goal is not to be confrontational but to make sure that you won’t be stressed out on your wedding day.

Hi Clarice!

It’s me again! I’m sorry it took me nearly a month after the wedding to write you. Bang and I spent our last two weeks in Manila saying goodbye to friends and family. Now we’re settled in China already.

I really just wanted to send you my sincerest thanks to you and fabulous team for helping us with our wedding. Thank you for being like a dependable friend to me throughout the entire process. Thank you for being an outlet for all my questions, concerns, and frustrations. Thank you for your cool calm in handling problematic situations. Thank you from shielding me from everything I didn’t want or need to deal with that day. Thank you for your professionalism. Thank you for helping make sure my walk down the aisle was perfectly paced and trip-free. Thank you for making sure everything went smoothly and as close to the plan as possible. And most of all, thank you for planning this wedding with me while my then fiance was MIA. Thank you for being my main partner in making sure everything came together on the most special day of our lives.

You must already get this a lot, but I’ll still say it anyway: our wedding wouldn’t have come together in that way if not for you. So really, thank you for helping make it a day we love looking back on.

I know you’re already making plans to leave the business, but I’ll send you our complete feedback re our suppliers, just in case it might help you with the clients you’ll still be able to entertain. We discussed it briefly after the party but we felt we weren’t able to raise some things in our rush and excitement. I’ll email you again soon

A few weeks ago I came across this article which showed simple dresses you can use for weddings. Some may actually be too simple but then again, at least you can wear them again. I’ve actually used number 5 in a wedding. Ganda ng kinalabasan.

But I’m back!!

Promise!

I left the house at 1pm. By 2:30pm, I was in Filinvest exit. Feeling ko maalanganin ako sa coding because of the Zapote road traffic so I was considering parking in SM Southmall and just taking the cab from there. At 2:48pm, I was stopped by a traffic police. Nangatwiran pa ako na 2:48 pa lang naman and magpa-park na lang ako sa SM, which is around a 100 meters away (so near yet so far!). Then the traffic police told me that they don’t have coding window in Las Pinas! Pucha!

He got my license. I was telling myself not to give money (you know, to help in the country’s advocacy for “No wangwang, No kotong”). He was telling me that he would give me a ticket. He knew I was from Project 8 so alam niyang malayo. Sabi niya kunin ko na lang daw sa Miyerkules. Hindi daw pwede bukas kasi day off niya. Hay naman! In the end, he said paying the fine to him would cost Php300. I showed him my wallet na Php120 lang ang laman. Sabi niya pwede na daw yun. Talaga naman! Then, in fairness to him, he asked for a piece of paper and told me to show the paper to whoever would stop me next. Sabihin ko lang daw dumaan na ako sa kanya para hindi na ako hulihin. Aside from the fact that he got my momney, he was actually courteous. And so I went on my way.

Around 10 meters before I was about to turn left to the village where I was going, another traffic police stopped me. Direcho siya. He’ll give me a ticket daw. I showed him the signature. Hindi niya tinanggap. Bawal daw yun! I knew that! * Insert tone of exasperation here* He didn’t even hint about payments. Basta he started writing na. Seeing no way out, I cried. Well, you know, I really have a healthy fear of authority (kaya ako good girl most of my life). When he saw me, he asked why I was crying. Sabi pa niya, masisira daw foundation ko kasi nangingilin na yung luha ko. Sabi ko lang ang layo-layo pa ng pinanggalingan ko tapos lahat ng pera ko binigay ko na dun sa isang traffic officer. He told me na sana nagpa-ticket na lang ako at hindi ako nagbayad. Then sabi niya, “Ma’am, wag kayong iiyak. Traffic violation lang naman ito.” Then he gave me back my license, patted me on the arm, and sent me on my way.

So now, I’m here at a restaurant in BF, whiling away time until 7pm. With my luck with traffic police today, pag lumabas ako, baka mahuli na naman ako ng mga dalawa o tatlo pang beses.

Long Island lovebirds celebrate 60-year anniversary at Waldorf Astoria – and at 1950’s prices!

It was a memento of their first night as man and wife: a receipt for $26.72 from the Waldorf-Astoria, where Edith and Robert Scalise began their life of wedded bliss.

Exactly 60 years later, the 85-year-old lovebirds checked into the famed Park Ave. hotel for the second time in their lives – and paid not a penny more.

In honor of the Long Island couple’s long and happy life together, the hotel offered them a suite to celebrate their wedding anniversary, and honored the same price they paid in 1950.

“We couldn’t afford to stay in this hotel again after that night,” Edith said.

“We used to come every once in a while for dinner, but I’ve been having this dream to stay here for years.”

Their room in 1950 cost just $23.10, their restaurant bill was $3.47 and the telephone charge was 15 cents.

They spent one night there as Mr. and Mrs. Scalise before heading to Bermuda on their honeymoon.

Returning to the hotel, where a representative said suites now go for between $600 to $800 a night, was a dream come true for the couple. Thursday’s stay capped off a fairy-tale day in which they stood side by side in St.Patrick’s Cathedral to renew their wedding vows and then danced cheek to cheek like they were teenagers.

“These 60 years were the happiest years of my life,” Robert said to his wife at the altar of the Lady Chapel in the rear of the majestic Fifth Ave. cathedral.

“I love you and will marry you again if you want, for another 60 years.”

The couple met in 1936 at Brooklyn’s Public School 157. The moment 12-year-old Robert set eyes on Edith he was dazzled by her beauty, charm and intelligence – and knew she was the one for him.

Although they were always friends and went on a couple of dates, Edith needed a little more persuading. It wasn’t until Robert was 22 and had returned from serving three years in the military that he finally won her heart for good.

“I always had feelings for Bob,” Edith said.

“In my heart, I always knew there was something very positive about how I felt about him, I was just frightened of his big Italian family.”

The couple wed on May 20, 1950, in a Williamsburg church, followed by a reception for 400 guests.

This time around was a more modest affair, but the happy couple reveled in their second turn of wedded bliss.

Edith was walked down the aisle by her three daughters, while their grandchildren and close friends looked on.

She refused to let Robert see her white outfit before the big day – including her garter – and the couple could not take their eyes off each other.

“It’s been an amazing journey,” Robert said. “I married my childhood sweetheart, I always knew I loved her, I always knew I wanted her.”

“I guess we have kind of danced through life,” Edith added. “The secret is not to give up at the first fight.”

“I’m so blessed to be married to you,” she said to her husband, as they exchanged rings for a second time.

“So am I,” he replied.
